The Nelson Fire got close. Too close...
It was a very terrifying experience for staff and volunteers, and of course Vacaville Police Officers that help us evacuate animals. It happened quickly. We were fine and then 10 minutes later we were not and had to evacuate.
The Fire departments that staged here at the SPCA kept the fire from the shelter fence line. We were only out a few days. All of our animals went to emergency foster homes for a few days. We made some great new friends, our community never ceases to amaze us and a few critics as well. You never know how you will handle an emergency until one happens, then you learn and get better.
We learned a lot.... Staff worked hard in the weeks that followed to develop an emergency evacuation plan that details the jobs of each person, established an off site staging area as well as dedicated crates and supplies for emergencies.
Let's hope we never have to use them.
