F/T - P/T Kennel Staff positions at SPCA of Solano County
The SPCA is a small non-profit animal shelter located in Vacaville. The Solano County SPCA is dedicated to finding loving responsible homes for all adoptable animals in Solano County. We also strive to reduce pet overpopulation and surrender rates by providing education to the public.
We are supported wholly by adoption fees and private donations. During their stay at the SPCA, the animals are provided with necessary veterinary care, vaccinations, food, shelter, training and plenty of love and affection. Staff is dedicated to improving the lives of the animals at the SPCA and increasing the understanding of companion animals.
Job Description
To feed and care for impounded animals and clean kennels, equipment and other areas at the SPCA of Solano County. Assist the public with questions and concerns and promote humane treatment of all animals.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This position is responsible for the routine animal care, treatment, maintenance, and cleaning activities of the SPCA of Solano County.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Immediate supervision is provided by the Animal Shelter Manager. Technical and functional supervision may also be provided by Adoption staff.
Essential Job Duties Include:
Depending upon assignment, duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
•Feed, water and care for all shelter animals.
•Visually inspect animals for signs of illness or unusual behavior.
•Clean kennels, equipment, and other areas at SCSPCA.
•Disinfect facilities and equipment as necessary.
•Observe quarantined animals and keep accurate records of health and behavior
•Assist in impounding and redeeming animals and maintaining related records.
•Under direction, administer medication to animals.
•Under direction, provide medical treatment to animals.
•Assist the public with questions regarding animal care, individual animals, and shelter policy.
•Assist adoption staff as needed
•Assist in behavior evaluations of individual animals
•Exercise and follow behavior modification programs for individual animals.
•Other related duties may also be performed; not all duties listed may necessarily be performed by each individual holding this position.
Knowledge of:
•Common practices and methods used in caring for animals.
•Practices, methods, and materials used in cleaning animal facilities.
•The habits and characteristics of domestic animals.
•The symptoms of common animal diseases.
•Occupational hazards and safety precautions of work around domestic animals.
•Animal behavior
Ability to:
•Read, write, and speak English at a level necessary for efficient job performance.
•Safely care for and physically control domestic and exotic animals and reptiles.
•Recognize symptoms of diseases in animals.
•Carry out oral and written instructions.
•Lift animals weighing approximately 50 pounds.
•Establish and maintain effective relationships with employees and the general public.
•Perform general duty labor for extended periods, sometimes under adverse weather conditions.
•Interact with the public in a hectic and often emotionally charged environment.
Must be available to work irregular hours, weekends and holidays
